Our History

WWT is an independent, privately-owned trail construction business, operating since 2000. We are located in Bozeman, MT and work all over the Intermountain West. We have over 20 combined years of experience, prior to founding WWT, working in trails and wilderness management for the USDA Forest Service. Our largest client has been the Forest Service; this has given us the opportunity to work on diverse and comprehensive trail construction projects. We are familiar with the complexity of government contracting, and can adapt to any client's objectives, protocols, specifications, or timelines.

Our Staff

Edward (Ted) Wood, President
M.S. Environmental Studies, University of Montana;
B.A. History, University of Texas-Austin

Ted grew up active in the outdoors of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and discovered the Rocky Mountain west in 1989, where he has lived since. After receiving his B.A., he moved around the west working for various governmental agencies and environmental groups and completed an M.S. in Environmental Studies with a Public Land Policy emphasis at the University of Montana. His love of the mountains found him work on trail crews which eventually evolved into running his own business doing private trail construction work. This business combines earning a living, spending 100 nights a year in mountain locales in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and elsewhere, with off-season travel and family time. The Bozeman area has been home to Ted and his wife Shana since 1997, where they continue to explore the local mountains and rivers on foot, on skis, and by boat.

Shana Driscoll Wood, Vice-President
M.S. Land Resources and Environmental Sciences, Montana State University-Bozeman;
B.S. Physical Geography, Montana State University-Bozeman

Shana became interested in trail building in 1986 as a Student Conservation Association (SCA) volunteer for the US Forest Service. She spent the next 10 years working seasonally for the Forest Service in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. Over those years she developed a deep love for living and working in the backcountry and a strong field work ethic. Returning to school in 1996, she spent the next 10 years as student and staff at MSU-Bozeman. After completing a thesis that integrated plant ecology and spatial sciences she managed invasive plant mapping projects with the National Park Service and Bureau of Reclamation. She joined Ted full time at WWT in 2006. She provides WWT with GPS and GIS mapping expertise.

Seasonal Employees

We bring on seasonal employees each year as needed, depending on our work schedule. Typically, from 2 to 5 experienced backcountry workers will join us for the field season.
